Mobile Tagging

Driving Internet Traffic

Mobile tags appear in magazines, on signs, buses, business cards, or just about any object that users might need information about. Users with a camera phone equipped with the correct reader application can scan the image of code causing the phone’s browser to launch and redirect to the programmed URL.

While already popular in Japan, consumers in the United States are just now becoming more familiar with mobile tags and what to do with them.

If your smartphone isn't already equipped with one, download a QR code reader. Then scan the code to learn more about our president on your smartphone.

Different Types of Codes:

QR Code

Quick Response (QR) code is a two-dimensional code that can be scanned by smart phone cameras to automatically pull up text, photos, videos, music and URLs. Initially these codes were used for tracking parts in vehicle manufacturing, now they are used in a much broader context, aimed at mobile phone users.

Microsoft Tag

In 2009, Microsoft introduced the Microsoft Tag format, based on the company's self-developed High Capacity Color Barcode (HCCB). Unlike most popular 2D barcodes, which use black-and-white square pixels, HCCBs are based on colors in a triangle-based arrangement.

How They Can Work For You

Here are a few ways that you can use mobile tags to spruce up your small business marketing strategies.

  • On business cards: A fast and simple way to use mobile tags for your own professional purposes is to place them on business cards. Generate a code that directs phones to your Facebook Page or your website.
  • On marketing materials: You’ve got flyers, brochures, programs, handouts and a myriad of other materials in your media kit. Add mobile tags to direct viewers to a particular how-to video, get them to follow you on Twitter or point them to a mobile-friendly landing page that promotes a new campaign.
  • In storefront windows: You can use this code to encourage Foursquare check-ins, point scanners to your Yelp profile or simply invite customers to share memories in photo, video or text.
  • For freebies: If you really want people to pay attention to your mobile tags, make them good for something fun. Say you’ve placed a mobile tag in your storefront window, why not reward those who scan it with 10% off their purchase? Give them something small to thank them for their patronage. Simply create a custom tag for the freebie you want to offer. You could even get creative and hide the tag offers online, like on your Facebook page or website or somewhere inside your store.
