The Power of SEO

Did you know that an estimated 85% of all Americans are using the web to search for various products and services? This is precisely why a company’s website and where it stands during the search process is so critical. While we rely heavily on the web, we may not realize just how many companies are reaching out to us and influencing our decisions. Today, the most used search engines are Google, Bing, and YouTube, and we don’t anticipate that changing any time soon.

Millennium’s search engine optimization (SEO) specialists work hard to employ the basic essential SEO tools in order to raise a website’s visibility on various search engines, which will in turn increase traffic to their website and garner new business.

What are the fundamentals of SEO?

1. URL

An important element of SEO is a website’s URL, which should be easy to read and consist of a few keywords that relate to the website’s content while avoiding any unnecessary special characters. SEO professionals research keywords to better understand what people are searching for and what they’re most likely typing into the search bar.

Notice how in the example below, the top URL uses specific keywords and is to the point, whereas the bottom one is full of random letters, numbers, and special characters and comes off as confusing and a potential threat if clicked on.

2. HTML Coding

This makes up the website, consisting of title, header, body tags, etc. For example, title tags, otherwise known as meta tags, used on search engine results pages (SERPs), present a small preview of what a particular page contains. They contain two types of content; organic results, which appear because of their relevance to whatever is being searched, and paid results, which are paid advertisements. Search engines will look at a page title as a signal of relevance and place it in the search results accordingly. That’s why it’s so important to present a clear and concise title.

3. Content

Of course, content is key. Relevant terms and phrases should be embedded into the content, making it even easier for search engines to categorize a website based on its relevancy to the topic searched. Search engines will rank a website based on its relevant content. Many websites contain a blog presenting the company’s upcoming events, news, and education information pertaining to the industry or company in particular. This is where backlinks come into play. Backlinks are links presented on a web page which link to another page. A page with backlinks is likely to rank higher with search engines.
