Hashtags are everywhere, or in case you haven’t made it to the 21st century, it used to be the pound sign. You see this tic-tac-toe board on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, at events, and even on commercials and movie trailers. You might find yourself wondering, “What’s the deal with these hashtags?” Don’t worry, you’re not alone. It’s no surprise that one of the questions we often hear about social media marketing centers around why hashtags even matter and what purpose do they serve.
Here are the top 4 reasons why you can no longer afford not to use hashtags in your social media marketing initiatives:
1. They allow for highly specific audience targeting
When you want to target your social media post to a specific group of people, there’s no better way than by using relevant hashtags. For example, if a yacht broker wants to promote their luxurious yachts, they might use #yachts or #yachtlife. Then, anyone who’s searching social media sites for conversations about yachts has the potential to find you.
2. They allow you to monitor your reputation
By keeping an eye on hashtags related to your brand or products, you can always have an idea of what people are saying about your company. If you’re not monitoring these hashtags, the conversation’s still going to be happening, you’re just not going to know about it. So, why not get involved?
3. They allow you to perform better customer service
Hashtags also allow you to find and respond to comments, complaints, and kudos quickly and efficiently. By monitoring mentions of your brand, you can make sure you always know what’s being said, and can respond as quickly as possible.
4. They allow you to promote special events, contests, or deals
Come up with a unique and creative hashtag for special events, deals, or promotions to facilitate easy sharing, as well as easy campaign tracking. For example, for our events, such as our Google Bites seminars, we include the hashtags #MM4Solutions and/or #GoogleBites.
There’s without-a-doubt a science to the effective usage of hashtags. While they’re essential for social media marketing, you don’t want to go overboard and use too many in one post, as they can be off-putting and get you unfollowed.
